So my husband and I have been living in Japan about 9 years now and we have been to a few of our friend`s weddings..the custom here is not to buy the couple a present but to give them A LOT of money (at least 250 bucks per person…usually even more..) . Part of the money pays for your place at the reception the rest goes toward helping the couple get a nice start in life. Sometimes the weddings can be a bit over extravagant, for example, the bride changes clothes A LOT, there is quite a show involved (an MC, with a multi media presentation of the couple`s life, a fake towering wedding cake, etc..), but I thought it was a great idea, especially in the States where weddings don`t cost quite as much and a 100 dollar a person give would be sufficient. This would be a good way to trim down the guest list, as many people would probaby not want to bring their kids and other significant others needlessly because of the price! What do you think?
Oh yes, the wedding favors include a catalogue where guests can pick out whatever they would like (usually about a 30 dollar gift).
